Seating Seminars
NEW! Eat, Breath and Move
A NEW two-day seminar
A Review of Body Systems and Solutions for Individuals with Mobility Impairments
To understand the full impact of mobility impairments, we need to understand the basic function of bodily systems. Often overlooked, immobility can lead to issues with musculoskeletal, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and integumentary (skin) systems. In order to provide solutions, these systems need to be explored and understood.
This two day course will provide a better understanding of the complications that can occur in the bodily systems and how to address them through seating and positioning as well as postural change. Our goal in this program is to provide a better understanding of how to improve our clients’ independence and quality of life.
Presenters:
Karen “Missy” Ball, MT, PT, ATP
Jill Sparacio, OTR/L ATP, ABDA
Andy Hicks, ATP, SMS, CAPS

The child, adult and aged populations will be discussed with regard to skeletal development & deterioration, structural deformities, motor & sensory development & deterioration, skin, and other issues pertinent to seating. The benefits of early, independent mobility will be discussed in the context of neuroplasticity. Ergonomic fit of a manual wheelchair for effective propulsion & reduction of injury will be discussed, as well as, certain frame characteristics.
Appropriate application of Freedom Design products will be demonstrated in case studies throughout the seminar. Lecture, case studies, research and possibly video will be used during the presentation.
Several diagnoses will be discussed throughout the seminar including CP, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy, CVA, Osteoporosis, Arthritis, SCI and SMA.

Standing Justified
Part of all seminar programs
This is a practical program on standing and weight bearing that explores the health complications and cost resulting from immobility. Research will be presented that indicates a consistent standing program can mitigate these health risks. Specific topics include evaluating clients to ensure they are appropriate for standing, determining the best configured standing device, providing suggestions for writing effective letters of medical necessity and discovering resources available to appeal a payer denial. Attendees will learn valuable information to help people who use wheelchairs maximize their quality of life. Course covers multiple diagnostic groups and ages.
Presented in a one or two hour format dependent on seminar choice.
